Where would Meg Ryan’s ‘When Harry Met Sally…’ characters be today?

Are they still coming to Katz’s Delicatessen?

Billy Crystal has shared where he thinks his and Meg Ryan’s beloved characters from “When Harry Met Sally…” would be today.

The 76-year-old actor spoke with E! host Laverne Cox on the red carpet ahead of the 2024 Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday.

“They would talk about downsizing,” he said. “They’re not ready for assisted living yet.”

“But they are still romantic and in love,” he added.

One of the most famous and critically acclaimed romantic comedies of all time, “When Harry Met Sally…” tells the story of two friends who have a slow-burn romance that breaks all slow-burn romances and finally reunite, 12 years after they first met.

And 35 years after the film premiered, Crystal thinks Harry and Sally would still keep it “romantic” after all this time.

“They’re probably having a really good time with their grandchildren and finding new ways to interact with each other,” he said at the Emmys.

Crystal also shared how he feels about being involved in a film that has left a lasting impression and is relevant to audiences for years.

“It’s extraordinary to be a part of such an evergreen[film]after all these years,” he noted. “Young people finding it; getting calls from film schools and 22-year-olds finding the film; 21-year-olds, and they come and talk to them about it.”

The actor attributed the staying power of “When Harry Met Sally…” to the “terrific direction” of Rob Reiner and a “brilliant script” from legendary writer Nora Ephron, who died in 2012 at age 71.

Crystal also credited Ryan and late co-stars Bruno Kirby and Carrie Fisher. “It was a small but mighty group,” he said.

The “City Slickers” actor was honored at the 46th Annual Kennedy Center Honors last December and paid tribute to Ryan, telling People , “We were brought together by (Reiner and Ephron), chosen to be this couple and you never know — almost 35 years later, we’re still a couple to everybody.”

“As you go along and new generations see this movie and feel it and watch it over and over again on Valentine’s Day, on New Year’s Eve, whatever it is,” he continued. “You know, people fall in love every day and people fall out of love every day.”

Crystal was at the Emmys a little over a month before the premiere of his new Apple TV+ series, “Before.” Crystal plays a widowed child psychologist in the thriller, which also stars Judith Light and Rosie Perez. “Before” premieres October 25.
