Possible crime scene

A Public Safety Department officer stands by a barrier tape at the Garapan Fishing Base as detectives from the Criminal Investigation Bureau investigate a possible crime scene. It is Thursday at 5:20 p.m.

On Thursday afternoon, a BODY with severe facial injuries and in an early stage of decomposition was found among the rocks on the shore of the Garapan fishing base.

Anthony Macaranas, commissioner of the Department of Public Safety, who was at the scene shortly after the body was discovered, said that around 5:07 p.m., a caller passing by the fishing base reported seeing a person lying on the rocks in the area.

Macaranas said responding officers found the body of a still-unidentified man with facial injuries. He said they could not determine the ethnicity of the body because the face was unrecognizable due to the condition of the injuries.

“Because of the (facial injuries) we cannot yet determine the identity,” Macaranas said, adding that there are also signs of corpse stiffening and early decomposition.

Variety learned that one of the witnesses described the body as that of a Chinese man.

On Thursday evening at 6:00 p.m., detectives from the DPS Criminal Investigation Bureau conducted an initial investigation.

At this point, the DPS commissioner said, “it is being assessed that this is a dead individual that could ultimately lead to anything.”

If the injuries indicate foul play, a murder investigation will be launched, Macaranas said.

The body was taken to the Commonwealth Healthcare Corp mortuary.
