FirstBank pledges support to creative sector

First Bank of Nigeria Limited has pledged to continue supporting the arts sector as part of its drive to grow a robust creative economy. Executive Director of Corporate Banking, Tosin Adewuyi, stated this during the stage performance of ‘The Noble Warrior’, a theatre production by Eni Ogun.

The performance of the play sponsored by FirstBank was part of activities to honour Nobel Peace Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, at the age of 90. The Executive Director noted that the 130-year-old bank has a history of supporting all sectors in the country, including the arts industry, adding that FirstBank’s sponsorship of Eni Ogun was aimed at celebrating Soyinka’s contributions and projecting Nigerian culture to the world.

“It’s also a way to support what’s ours, a lot of history, a lot of stories, a lot of moral teachings that come through. It’s a representation of who we are as a people. This is where you see First Bank doing what it does best, supporting,” he said.

Speaking about the play, Adewuyi explained that the British Major, an important character, still needs a Nigerian leader to carry out his agenda and plan.

“And ultimately the new king ascended the throne because the community came together and agreed that certain things were not being done in the right way and decided to put their foot down. This is just life, this is just social. In the end, everyone has a role to play – individuals and institutions.

Producer, Cash Onadele, called on the federal government to promote ethnography and honour indigenous people who promote the country’s rich cultural heritage.
