OTTAWA — The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs has criticized the federal government for cutting funding for searches of former boarding school sites, saying in a statement that it is deeply disappointed and outraged.

Communities previously could receive up to $3 million per year through the Residential Schools Missing Children Community Support Fund, but funding is now capped at $500,000.

“The decision to cut substantial funding for this critical initiative is not only disheartening, but also disrespectful to the survivors and families impacted by the boarding school system,” Deputy Grand Chief Betsy Kennedy said in a statement.

“The search for truth and justice must continue without further delays or federal obstacles, especially when it comes to the lost lives of our children.”
